<span style="font-size: 11pt;">The Youth Center is currently accepting registrations for their 2020 Summer Teen Camp! <span style="font-size: 11pt;">Parents who have sent their children to summer day camps already know the benefits of doing so for their children’s growth and development. The Youth Center Teen Camp does more than keep a child occupied and safe. It enriches their lives for years to come.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Since 1952, The Youth Center in Los Alamitos has clearly seen how these benefits translate into the lives of children through social, educational and recreational programs including the popular Teen Camp. Young participants reap the benefits of going to summer camp that research has shown will shape their lives now and in the future. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

The Gala will feature dinner, dancing, live music, special cocktails and a silent auction. Each year the Campaign Chair presents a new slogan for the campaign. Klisanin chose a slogan that is close to his heart, as it was the mantra he shared with his team as a high school football coach, “Who told you you couldn’t do that?” to which The Youth Center replies, “Not us, we think you can do anything!” Of the campaign, Klisanin said, “</span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">I am so grateful to all of our campaigners who are out all over Southern California collecting pledges of support for kids.</span></div>

To date, approximately $155,000 has been raised through sponsorships, mini events and individuals asking friends and family for their support. <br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It
started in middle school with The Youth Center’s after school program then led to
volunteering and working as staff at the award-winning nonprofit, which
successfully lauched Katrina Rochelle Cherney success later in life. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The
mother of four young children who now lives in Georgetown, Texas never forgot what
she learned at The Youth Center, and says it helped her to launch her own small
business that’s not so small anymore on Etsy.com. It sells creative works of wood jewelry organizers and burnt wood signs
and shelving. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“It’s
a full time job for me and my husband,” Cherney said. “We now have almost 1,800
sales in our Etsy Shop.” The best part is how the business allows them to raise
and enjoy their children at home, in an historical place that’s also modern living.
Their four children are 9-month-old Wyatt, 4-year-old Willow, 7-year-old Lilly,
and 8-year-old Daisy. The family moved to Texas in 2018 to have a larger home
in a place with a slower lifestyle. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“Katrina
has always been a go-getter,” said Youth Center Executive Director Lina Lumme. “Her
creative and artistic talents show through her work. We are proud to see what
an amazing mom and entrepreneur she grew up to be.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“The
Youth Center was like a second home to me from a very young age, and I couldn’t
leave it behind,” Cherney said. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Her
story began when she was a 3rd grader at Lee Elementary School in
Los Alamitos living across the street from The Youth Center. She and neighborhood
friends would come every day, playing pool and ping pong, watching movies,
making new friends while looking up to staff member role models like Hans Lumme
and others. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“When
I started 6th grade at Oak Middle School, I made up a calendar at
The Youth Center which had fun days like ‘crazy hair day’ and ‘dress up days,’”
Cherney said. “I loved to participate in the different activities.” </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In
high school, she volunteered because out of her love for The Youth Center. By
age 17, she got her first job with the after school program. By age 18, she
began working at Camp SHARK, and then by age 19, she became office manager. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“It
was such a fun and very rewarding job in more ways than I can count,” Cherney added.
</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On
the job she learned many skills which helped her to launch and run her own business
including advertising, customer service, different computer programs, finances
and time management, and handling stressful situations. But it was through her
innate creativity and doing artistic projects at The Youth Center that she later
became an entrepreneur.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“I
still use all of what Lina taught me and what I learned through my experiences working
at The Youth Center,” she added.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In
2013 after leaving work at The Youth Center, Cherney became a stay at home
mother trying to get her small business going for her family. Her husband was
working a full time job with long hours, and they were living in a two bedroom
upstairs condo with an already large family. The couple then up and decided to
move to Texas.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“We
made the move and really focused on our business,” she explained. “By Christmas
last year, our Etsy business took off. It’s now a full time job for me and my
husband.” The couple now does shows and booths at various events throughout
Texas. Their plans for the future are to continue to see their business and
family thrive, while staying at home enjoying their children.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Not
long ago, Cherney returned for a visit to The Youth Center giving a tour to her
four children of the place she spent half of her childhood. She donated a large
check in support of the programs that were so near and dear to heart growing
up, according to Lumme. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“The
Youth Center is a part of who I am,” said Cherney. “And I will support them
because they were always here for me when I was growing up.” </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With a passion for helping children, The Gardens Casino in
Hawaiian Gardens supports kids in Long Beach and beyond, for the last 7 years
giving at total of $15,000 to The Youth Center in Los Alamitos. They recently
gave $1,000 as a major sponsor at the award-winning nonprofit’s “Monte Carlo
Night” casino night fundraiser.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“The Garden’s Casino truly loves helping children in need,”
Youth Center Executive Director Lina Lumme said. “Our kids not only come from
Los Alamitos and throughout Orange County, but also come from Long Beach and
Los Angeles County. With their generous funding, they’ve helped kids attend our
summer camps and after school programs, who otherwise not be able to come.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Garden’s Casino’s on-going spirit of giving was evident during
The Youth Center’s annual fundraising Community Support Campaign and at their golf
tournament as an ‘Eagle Sponsor” at the $2,500 level this year. It speaks to
their commitment to future generations. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“Kids always have a soft spot in my heart, and are the
future of all of us,” said The Gardens Casino General Manager Ron Sarabi. “When
Julie approached me 5 years ago and explained what The Youth Center does, I said,
‘I’m in!’” It is Youth Center Executive Assistant Julie Rubin who has worked
with Sarabi over the years. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“If I’m a good partner for the community [as in supporting
The Youth Center], I’m successful,” continued Sarabi, who has been in
management of four casinos, serving with The Gardens Casino since 1998. In
recent times, he’s built up the casino, planned and designed a total renovation
for two years, and helped to reconstruct it for another two years thereafter. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"Mr. Sarabi and the Gardens Casino are fully committed to the
future of our youth,” said Youth Center Executive Assistant Julie Rubin. “They
have supported us every year and allowed us to expand and improve our
programming for children and teens. We are forever grateful!"</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Since 1952, The Youth Center provides children ages 5 to 17
with social, recreational and educational programs including after school
programs and tutoring, summer camps, and the only elementary music program
offered in the Los Alamitos Unified School District (LAUSD). Solely funded by community
donations and grants, they receive no federal or state funding. They have been
recognized by the White House, state senators, congress members and others for
their outstanding service. The Youth
Center is located at 10909 Oak Street in Los Alamitos. For more information,

<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By Laurie Hanson</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It all started with a donation of a flute and violin, progressing
to a friendly neighbor-to-neighbor chat asking what to do with an old piano.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Knowing The Youth Center offers music lessons to all Los Alamitos
Unified School District (LAUSD) elementary students, the President of the Seal
Beach Philharmonic Committee Louise Dubos called them about donated instruments
they had received. The Youth Center’s Executive Director Julie Rubin was
contacted, and arranged to have the piano picked up, no small feat since it
weighs in at 400 pounds.</span></span><span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mario and Nancy Iacoboni’s grown children never took up playing
the family Wurlitzer spinet piano, so they were looking to donate it to a
family who was interested in a piano. By asking their neighbor Dubos if she knew
of anyone, they discovered The Youth Center. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Seal Beach Philharmonic Committee is now asking the community
to join in on a musical instrument scavenger hunt to find no-longer-used
instruments that individuals might have in their closet, attic or garage. The
committee will refurbish, repair and donate these instruments to students in
the LAUSD. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Youth Center plans on donating the instruments to elementary
school children in their music program who are on scholarships. The donated
piano is now in the main room of The Youth Center available to After School
Program children. They are now actively seeking a volunteer to provide piano
instruction to the students.</span></span><span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Music crosses all boundaries whether man-made or natural. It
reaches into the soul of us all,” said Nancy Iacoboni. “We wanted to make sure
that the piano would go to a good cause, and were especially interested in
gifting it directly to an underprivileged school where it would be played by
students or to an established charity which distributes musical instruments to
those who would not otherwise be able to learn to play music.”</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Her husband Mario added, “Music is everything to me. I am
literally surrounded by music every day. It can be nourishing, soothing,
thought provoking, and a means of transcendence from the mundane.” He said he
and Nancy travel for music and see many local events as well.</span></span><span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“We are grateful and elated to have the support of the Seal Beach

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By Laurie Hanson</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It’s
homecoming for The Youth Center this year with their 20th annual
holiday tree lot back in Los Alamitos. Last
year, the award-winning nonprofit was temporarily relocated to Cypress due to
construction at Ganahl Lumber, but now they’re back.</span><br />
<br />
<div style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“We’ll
always be grateful to the City of Cypress for giving us a temporary home,”
Youth Center Executive Director Lina Lumme said. “However, we’re very excited
to be back home at Ganahl Lumber, where we originally started selling trees for
cause 20 years ago.”</span></div>
<br />
<div style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Not
only do 100 percent of tree lot proceeds go to support kids, other nonprofits
in Los Alamitos benefit as well including Precious Life Shelter, Casa Youth
Shelter, Grateful Hearts and We Care of Los Alamitos. Through a partnership
with We Care of Los Alamitos, free trees are annually provided to families in
need. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Three
kinds of trees including Noble, Nordman Fir, and Douglas Fir will be
sold along with wreaths, garland and other holiday items when the lot opens Nov.
30 to Dec. 17 in the Ganahl Lumber parking lot located at 10742 Los Alamitos
Blvd., in Los Alamitos. Lot hours are weekdays noon to 9 p.m. and weekends 9
a.m. to 9 p.m. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Youth
volunteers ages 14+ can gain valuable customer service skills and community
service hours by working at the tree lot. A mandatory training for all volunteers
planning to sell trees is scheduled on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
at The Youth Center at 10909 Oak Street in Los Alamitos<span style="font-size: 12pt;">. </span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“Over 350 volunteers from local schools and businesses help us every
season,” Youth Center Executive Assistant Julie Rubin said. “There’s nothing
like being around the wonderful scent of pine while helping families find the
perfect tree.”</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;"></span></div>
<br />
<div style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Selecting a tree from the Youth Center is an annual
tradition for many, with every penny raised going directly to their After
School programs, Music program, the Leadership Academy, “Every 15 Minutes” Camp
SHARK and Teen Camp. </span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“The proceeds fund scholarships for low-income families and
allow us to provide top quality and affordable programs to our community,”
Executive Director Lina Lumme said. ”We can’t thank Chad Kidder, General
Manager at Ganahl, and the entire Ganahl Lumber family for helping us for the
20th year in a row.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Youth Center is
looking for holiday tree lot volunteers (ages 14+). Volunteers must attend the
mandatory training on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at The Youth Center located at 10909
Oak Street in Los Alamitos. There is no volunteer parking allowed at Ganahl
Lumber. For more information about The Youth Center, please visit online

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Youth Center in Los Alamitos and
eight fellow nonprofits partnered with the Orange County Community Foundation
(OCCF) to host the second annual <i>Igniting Potential, </i>a Giving Day to
support the youth of Orange County on Sept. 18. The 24-hour online effort
raised more than $127,000 with participation from 518 donors, and The Youth
Center raised $5,037 in their first effort at the fundraising drive. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The nine participating organizations
included KidWorks, Orange County Boy Scouts of America, The Youth Center, Boys
Hope Girls Hope of Southern California, MOMS Orange County, Assistance League
of Irvine, Parentis Foundation, Us Too Gymnastics and Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Orange County.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“We are so very grateful for
everyone’s support in this new endeavor to not only help The Youth Center but
also to benefit other organizations who help kids throughout Orange County,”
Youth Center Executive Director Lina Lumme said. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">OCCF powered this campaign with
seed funding for the marketing assets, campaign resources and collaborative
partnerships. <i>Igniting Potential</i> is part of a series of collaborative Giving
Days held throughout the year that are designed to boost the capacity of local
nonprofits to meet Orange County’s needs. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“Our
local nonprofit leaders and the generous community joined forces for a second
year to make a difference in the lives of Orange County’s youth,” said Shelley
Hoss, president, OCCF. “We are proud to continue helping nonprofits achieve greater
collective impact.”</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">OCCF first challenged Orange County
residents to “give where their heart lives” during the inaugural i©oc Giving Day in 2015, raising more than $1.8 million
through gifts to 347 participating nonprofits in just 30 hours. OCCF nearly doubled
those results in 2016 during the second annual i©oc Giving Day, receiving contributions totaling $3.2
million for 418 participating nonprofits. In 2017, OCCF re-envisioned i©oc as an expanded opportunity for nonprofits to
connect with one another in support of their shared missions. The seven Giving
Days held throughout 2018 raised a total of $1.4 million for local
organizations.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By Laurie Hanson</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Not only does he build for a living, long time Cypress
resident, business owner Sam McCall of Cal Custom Interiors believes in
building up the lives of young people as the newest addition to the Youth
Center Board of Directors. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A general contractor since 1976 in his own family-run
business that proudly serves Los Alamitos and the surrounding communities,
McCall first learned about The Youth Center when purchasing a Christmas tree
from their lot at Ganhal Lumber. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“After talking with people at the lot and seeing signs for
The Youth Center, I decided I wanted to make an impact and join a worthy
cause,” McCall said who has supported the award-winning nonprofit on a
volunteer basis for the past five to six years. “This past year, I wanted to
take it to the next level and join the board.” </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“I love that the Board of Directors are helping young people
in the community, and giving them a launching pad for their lives,” he added.
“That cause really seemed to resonate with me.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">McCall said it’s his personal desire as a board member to
help an incredible group of individuals who are like-minded and are giving with
their hearts. He added no one on it is
self-serving, and that everyone on The Youth Center’s board cares and are
passionate about their service. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“This isn’t about personal accomplishments or ego,” he said.
“I just hope to help this organization make a difference in the community and
create opportunities for others. There are some very intelligent people on the
board, and I want to do my part to make an impact.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">McCall’s philosophy for giving back to future generations
lies in his belief that it’s his God-given purpose in life, the reason why he
is here on earth. He said he often asks himself what he can do to give a
helping hand and make the world a better place. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Not everyone is born with the same opportunities,” he said.
“I want to serve as a guide, when possible, to lead people to grateful and
prosperous lives.” </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Since 1952, it’s been the mission of The Youth Center to
transform lives one family at a time. For more information, please visit online

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The Rossmoor Community Services District (RCSD) actively
partners with The Youth Center in Los Alamitos, making a big difference in
the lives of local families and children. This year, The Youth Center provided more
than $40,000 in scholarship funds for kids to attend summer camp thanks to the
RCSD.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">With the support of the RCSD, The Youth Center added a third
after school program site, Rossmoor After School Club and Learning Services
(RASCALS) at Rush Park.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>RASCALS at
Rossmoor Park was open in 2015. “From homework time, tutoring, sports, art,
science projects to reading club, The Youth Center not only keeps children safe
but enriches their lives with new experiences, self-confidence, and knowledge
to succeed in school and life”, said Youth Center Executive Director Lina Lumme.
“The partnership with RCSD allows us to provide meaningful programing and offer
scholarships to local families in need.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">“On behalf of the Rossmoor Community Services Board of
Directors, we are excited to partner with the Youth Center in expanding after
school programs,” said RCSD General Manager Joe Mendoza. “Anytime the District
can provide programs and resources to families, and especially for our youth
directly through local non-profits, it’s a win-win for the community.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The mission of the RCSD is to provide superior,
cost-effective services that enhance the quality of life for the residents of
Rossmoor. Approximately 10,500 residents reside in Rossmoor. The RCSD was
formed in 1986 by voters, having many of the powers of a city with the
exception of land-use planning. The powers granted to the RCSD were public
recreation facilities and services, street lighting, road rights-of-way services,
sewer services, collection and disposal of garbage, according to the RCSD
website. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">“Our partnership with the RCSD is vital to the
community,” said Lumme. “Thanks to them, we are able to help more local
families and children.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Since 1952, The Youth Center’s mission is to transform
children’s lives one family at a time through collaborative social, educational
and recreational programs. Their program area not only serves Rossmoor and Los
Alamitos, but also cities in Orange and Los Angeles counties. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The Youth Center now has three after school programs, one
next to Oak Middle School in Los Alamitos, at Rossmoor Park and at Rush
Park in Rossmoor. They receive no federal or state funding, but rely upon the
community and grants to offer low cost programs to youth ages 5 to 17 years
old. Registrations are going on now for their After School Program at The Youth
Center located at 10909 Oak Street in Los Alamitos, with some openings at RASCALS
Rush Park. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(Rossmoor Park is full.) For

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By Laurie Hanson</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Life is challenging enough even when things are going well,
but when three Youth Center Leadership Academy graduates from Los Alamitos High
School (LAHS) faced obstacles, they ultimately exceled in their young lives. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For Ryan Bacher, age 16, of Rossmoor it was health problems.
For Iris Lin Chow, age 16, of Seal Beach it was a learning disability, and for Jared
Martinez, age 17, of Los Alamitos it was being challenged because he is
Hispanic and doesn’t come from wealth. Each of the kids bravely dealt with what
life gave them and went on to succeed in school and life. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Getting beyond his gastrointestinal disease, Bacher went
onward as a student athlete and making the Honor Roll at LAHS and volunteers at
Casa Youth Shelter in Los Alamitos. Chow overcame Dyslexia, no longer having it
and went on to perform ballet in <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Swan
Lake</i> in China. Martinez maintains high grades and also made the Honor Roll
at LAHS. All are formulating their big dreams for the future, and the
Leadership Academy helped them to take one more step in reaching their goals.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Simply wanting to be a success, Bacher learned much more
about having great job interview skills at the Academy. Chow who studies ballet
five days a week, hopes to someday go into some aspect in the science field,
and especially liked the cooking, finance and job interview workshops. Martinez
is now taking classes at Cypress College, aspires to earn his doctorate degree at
Cal Tech or UC Davis, and got a lot out of cooking, finance and auto
maintenance. Each of the students also passed along what they learned at the Leadership
Academy to their parents.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“I learned how to complete an [employment] application,”
Bacher said. According to him, his parents think he’s better equipped with life
skills after taking the Leadership Academy course. Chow’s parents also thought she
would be more prepared for life beyond high school, and Martinez’s parents
thought the Academy was a great course for him as well. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">All three students graduated this summer from The Youth
Center’s Leadership Academy. The Academy is held each summer and has workshops
on goal setting, self-acceptance, managing finances and credit, healthy eating
and cooking on a budget, automotive maintenance and car insurance. The students
also gained valuable job skills with the Youth Employment Services (YES)
instructors and volunteers from the Hyatt Corporation who conducted mock job
interviews. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Youth Center’s Leadership Academy prepares teens for
life beyond high school, whether they are planning on attending college , entering
the workforce, or both. A total of 31 students from various high schools
attended the Academy this year. A total of nine experienced instructors hand
selected from the community taught the four day course, which culminated in a
graduation dinner prepared by the students for their family and friends.
Students were acknowledged by local government officials and high school
principals for their accomplishment. Upon graduation, mentors are offered to
all students. For more information about The Youth Center’s Leadership Academy,

<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Registration
is now open for after school instrumental music classes K – 5th grades to be held at local
elementary schools in Los Alamitos Unified School District. The elementary music
program is one of The Youth Center's seven programs for children and teens
in the Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach and surrounding communities.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Classes
start in September, and students can choose to learn the violin, viola, cello, clarinet,
saxophone, flute, trumpet, electric bass, or percussion. Classes
include Mini Percussion (K-2 grades), Beginning Strings and Band, and for more
experienced students there’s Variety Band and String Ensemble.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“Music provides students with a wealth of benefits,” said
Youth Center Music Director Daniel Van Andler. “In addition to
obtaining musical skills needed to become a performer, a child learns skills
that can be used in every facet of life. Teamwork, dedication, self-discipline
and responsibility prepare a child for a successful future in any profession
he/she may choose.” </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“A variety of research shows that music students are among
the academically strongest in their schools, and score higher on the SAT than
other students,” continued Van Andler. “Most colleges and universities now look
for more than just good grades on a child’s transcript. They want well-rounded
students that have been able to accomplish more than textbook knowledge.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For thirty one-hour classes including two rehearsals and
concerts the cost is $399 per student for the 2019-20 school -year. Scholarship applications will be accepted for
the program as well. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By Laurie Hanson</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When no one else would, The Youth Center stepped up to help Kiewit,
one of North America’s largest construction and engineering organizations, to
recycle over 1,500 bottles and cans weekly for a year from their Long Beach
site.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While working for Southern California Edison (SCE) to bring their
power plant located at Studebaker Road and Pacific Coast Highway up to today's
standards, Kiewit contacted many nonprofit organizations, seeking to recycle to
meet their high environmental standards and to give back to the
community. But unfortunately, no one wanted to do it for different
reasons.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“When Nancy reached out to me, I was excited,” said Youth Center
Executive Assistant Julie Rubin. “I knew the project would not be easy, but
Kiewit has been wonderful to work with. Over the last year they have become a
good friend of the Youth Center.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“Helping the environment together with local volunteers was great,”
said Youth Center Executive Director Lina Lumme. “We raised money for scholarships
while meeting extraordinary people.” </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“The Y.C. Team” consisting of staff, board members, volunteers and
kids was armed with aprons and gloves for the “dirty job” where they sorted,
bagged and hauled a truck load weekly to the local recycling center. Kiewit
provided a year’s worth of empty trash bags to make the project a bit easier.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When the time came for The Youth Center to hold its annual Golf
Tournament, Kiewit management decided to make it a teambuilding event. Kiewit brought
a team of 21 employees to the Youth Center’s annual Golf Tournament on July 15
at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. “I helped out with the recycling.
It was not pretty,” said Youth Center Board Member and Golf Tournament Chairman
Arnie Fine. “It made my day when Kiewit signed up for the tournament. Because
of their support and commitment to our children, we were able to raise
$20,000.” </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“Our team had a blast at the golf
tournament,” said Kiewit representative Nancy Fohrenck. “Two of our employees
ended up winning raffle prizes, and the team I was on won the Honesty Award! We’re
so glad we were able to attend and help support the kids.” She added its part of Kiewit’s core values to
give back to local communities and create successful business relationships.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The golf tournament was especially enjoyable for the participating
Kiewit employees who liked being outdoors, having great food, contests and a
silent auction. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the end whether it’s by taking on a “dirty job” or teeing up, it’s
truly all about the kids. When no one else wants to take on difficult projects,
The Y.C. Team does because they see how much of a difference it makes. They work
hard throughout the year to raise every penny to fund scholarships for their
after school programs, summer camps, and elementary music program. The Youth Center never turns any child away
for inability to pay.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sign-ups are going on now for their After School Programs and
Music Program. For more information and registration, please visit online at <a href="http://www.theyouthcenter.org/">www.theyouthcenter.org</a>. The
Youth Center is a 501(c)3 local nonprofit. It does not receive any state or
federal funding and relies upon contributions from the local community and
beyond.</span><br />

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Kids dreaming of being the next Tiger Woods learn golf and life
fundamentals on Fridays at Camp S.H.A.R.K. in Rossmoor Park. About 20 kids have
a swinging good time thanks to skilled instructors from PlayTGA of Long Beach
and their partnership with The Youth Center this summer.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“The kids are doing great in class!” said PlayTGA golf coach Kevin
Oliver who has played the sport for 20 years, and instructed the last two years.
“It shouldn't surprise anyone that kids generally have better than average
hand eye coordination. Sometimes we just have to let them show it by giving
them a safe space to swing away and see what they can do.” </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Always ready with clubs, baskets of balls and a ready smile Coach
Kevin said, “Sports, and golf in particular, can teach us a lot about life.
Things like sportsmanship, perseverance, leadership and much more can be
cultivated from each and every experience.” </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Kids learn techniques in how to properly grip the club like
holding a “hot dog,” how to “sweep the floor” when swinging, how to aim and
stand properly with the right posture. Aside from that, the coaches try not to force
too much on them so they can enjoy themselves first and foremost. Typically
they are introduced to one new lesson each class to build upon a
foundation, explained Coach Kevin. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“I want to hit the ball as far as Tiger Woods and play when I grow
up,” said 8-year-old Joseph, a first time golf student who’s thinking of taking
the class throughout the summer. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In her third golf class, also aspiring to be like Tiger Woods, is
9-year-old Audrina. She likes learning all the different techniques like “half
swings,” and how Coach Kevin breaks things down. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“I like how Kevin makes it easy for us, and I like hitting the
ball into the hole, because sometimes we try to hit it the farthest,” said
Audrina. She and 8-year-old is Abby hope to play with family members and
continue to play when grown up. The same is true for 10-year-old Elliot, who
proudly drove a ball past and in between two driving target flags set into
place in her first class.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">PlayTGA offers sport instruction to week-long camps and after
school enrichment programs throughout Long Beach, Seal Beach and Los Alamitos. They
teach fundamentals and improvement through station-based learning and
repetition instruction in golf, tennis, volleyball and lacrosse. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“We believe sports can change lives,” said Coach Kevin. “It’s our
job to create lifelong sports enthusiasts out of each and every student.” </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“We came onboard with Camp S.H.A.R.K. because I felt it was a
mutual belief to offer affordable, youth programs which are much needed in our
communities,” he said. “Especially ones that focus on getting kids off the couch
and out from behind their devices long enough to engage with one another and
learn what life has to offer.” Camp S.H.A.R.K. offers a total electronics-free summer
day camp experience to children ages 5 to 12.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“I have been lucky to be a part of sports my entire life, and its’
afforded me many lessons on how to be successful,” continued Coach Kevin. “I am
just honored that we can pass those lessons on to the children of our
great communities to keep the future bright.” </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By Laurie Hanson</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Budding scientists were inspired at The Youth Center’s Camp
S.H.A.R.K. with experiments during “Mad Science Week” on June 13 at Rossmoor
Park. About 30 children witnessed wonders in chemistry and buoyancy.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Camp Staff Member Elizabeth Masters carried out a balloon
blow up experiment using vinegar and baking soda which 6-year-olds Royce and
Benny especially liked as their buddies 5-year-old Noah and 11-year-old Greyson
were bedazzled. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“I like science experiments and I like explosions,” said
Royce. Benny also said he likes learning how things explode and creating
things, while Noah expressed similar interests. Grayson simply enjoys doing
different experiments. All the children
said they hope to one day grow up to be scientists as they watched Masters pour
vinegar into a bottle then top it with a deflated balloon filled with baking
soda, that once mixed caused it to inflate purely by chemistry.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“It was fascinating how the balloon blew up,” said
8-year-old Gia. “We really don’t do experiments in school, but I like science a
lot.”</span><br />
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-irVPSyPrbyc/XQkCzuMUs1I/AAAAAAAABRs/a4TOZ_kn-m0pMqWOlKgC4iyo4qZaDKHrACLcBGAs/s1600/DSC_0734.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><b></b><i></i><u></u><strike></strike><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“It’s cool,” said 6-year-old Caitlin. “I did this once at my
house, and it was cool at both places.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The second experiment was something Camp Staff Member Coby
Palamares explained was an exercise in buoyancy, something he learned while studying Biology on his path to become a future doctor. Using just ketchup, water and salt the children
looked on asking if it would explode, their collective favorite desired
reaction. When poured into the water,
the ketchup sank to the bottom. Once salt was added it separated into tiny red
bubbles that floated and swirled around.
</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“I like science and hope to someday be a doctor or nurse,”
said Palamares to the kids as they looked on and applauded.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A bit of magic was performed with one last experiment. Excited
and again hoping for an explosion, the kids counted to 10 as water and vinegar
where mixed then combined with dirty pennies. Greyson who already did this experiment last
year in school, looked on as the pennies shined up like new.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Next week, the Camp S.H.A.R.K. kids will be making slime out
of common household ingredients, a favorite science-related activity. Camp
S.H.A.R.K. stands for “Science, Hands On, Art, Recreation and Knowledge,” and
offers an electronics-free summer day camp for children ages 5 to 12 out of
Rossmoor Park. For more information about The Youth Center’s Camp S.H.A.R.K.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Youth
Center and Rossmoor Community Services District (RCSD) are once again
partnering to bring a new after school program location to Rush Park in
Rossmoor beginning next school year. Enrollment is now open and the program
will serve 30 children in 1st through 5th grade students
with "Walking Bus" from Hopkinson Elementary School. A ribbon cutting
ceremony was held May 29.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“It is
incredible to be able to open our new after school program at Rush Park,” said
Youth Center Executive Director Lina Lumme. “We have been partnering with RCSD
for the past 28 years, and together, we have served over 7,000 families.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">She continued
to say that because of the partnership, The Youth Center is able to offer a
low-cost and high quality after school care with homework help to the Rossmoor
community. “We need to continue investing in our kids to secure their success
in the future,” added Lumme.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">RCSD Director
Michael Maynard commented, “We want kids to have a place to go after school
that is safe, secure and supervised. It’s all about the kids. That’s why we’re
here.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Similar
sentiments were also expressed by RCSD Director Bill Kahlert who expressed the
RCSD is there to help with anything they can do for the community as a whole,
and that they want the kids to feel comfortable at the new location.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Similar to the
R.A.S.C.A.L.S. program currently offered out of Rossmoor Park, children will
receive on-going individualized care in a small group setting, and The Youth
Center will continue to promote their literacy reading program at the new
location. Both science and reading will be a part of the kids' daily
activities.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Each day
children will be walked to the Rush Park location from Hopkinson Elementary by
Youth Center staff and have daily homework help, reading time, games, crafts
and outdoor play at the park’s playground. Tuition is $150 a month for
full-time attendance Monday through Friday, but a part-time option is
available. Space is limited. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Youth Center recently welcomed their new

team. She will be shaping their After School Program for next year, and will be
assisting with the award-winning nonprofit’s Camp S.H.A.R.K. this summer.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“I have always had a passion for working with
children,” Harris said. “I chose The Youth Center as my forever home because of
their mission statement being parallel to my own dreams.” She hopes to “transform children’s lives one
family at a time,” which is part of The Youth Center mission statement.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Harris holds a bachelor’s degree from Cal State
University, Long Beach in Child Development and Family Studies, and is originally
from Chatsworth. Her experience ranges
from retail to project management, and she worked her way through college as a
freelance nanny. Her first job after school was as a recruiting manager for a
start-up agency that provided on-demand babysitting. While in that role, she
better developed her communication skills, built a network of connections with
people in the same industry as well as other skills. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“While
I do not have any children of my own, I look at each and every child at The
Youth Center as mine,” she said. “The children of today are our future! It is
now that we need to put in the effort to help every child become the best them
they can be. “</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Harris
said with electronics usage on the rise, more and more kids are choosing to sit
and play video games, be on their social media accounts, or watch videos
instead of enjoying the world around them. She hopes to stay one step ahead by
keeping children’s minds, bodies, and spirits active. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Her
advice to kids today is to cherish their youth while they have it, and to
appreciate the smaller things in life. “When we are kids, we want to grow up so
fast, and unfortunately we can miss out on what life has to offer us,” she
explained. “I would tell today’s youth to slow down, cherish the time they have
and just enjoy being a child.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As
program supervisor, Harris hopes to be able to influence children’s futures. “From
the activities and programs we will have during the After School Program to
fundraising, I hope to make a difference.” She hopes to grow with The Youth
Center and be directly involved with their annual fundraising campaign and
serve as a director at their events, with a long term goal of serving as
executive director.</span><br />

California. (May 2, 2019) – </b>For children across the nation, the word
“summer” evokes a carefree feeling. As the school bells dismiss for summer, they
are eager to trade their backpacks for flip flops! Education experts, however,
want parents to know that the summer break has historically caused a “summer
slide” with academics! Ongoing <a href="https://www.summerlearning.org/at-a-glance/">research</a> indicates that
most students can lose up to two months of critical math and reading skills,
which leads to educators spending at least three weeks re-teaching lessons when
the school year begins.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
With a little ingenuity and planning, parents can help prevent
their children from spiraling down the “summer slide” while still creating a
fun and memorable summer. Take advantage of the summer months by exploring new hobbies
and building upon skills learned during the school year with these simple tips:<o:p></o:p></div>
